About this lot

Description

Dundee - A set of four Victorian silver teaspoons, maker unknown, (RN within a rectangle), town mark struck twice, circa 1865, 'Fiddle' pattern, monogrammed, 1.7ozt gross (4)
Other Notes: Dundee is one of the rarer and more collectable of the Scottish provincial assay offices. The assay town mark - a pot of lilies - was taken from the arms of the borough. The three lilies first appear on the seal of the city in 1416 and symbolise St Mary, one of the two patron saints of the city. The lilies are flowers of purity and had strong religious connotations, especially with the Virgin Mary. The maker - RN - is one of several Dundee silversmiths whose names have not been ascertained, however the complete set of marks is illustrated in 'Jackson's'.
