The custom of 'tandem marking' or striking an extra mark on silver to denote the retailer is thought to have started in Ireland the late 18th century - with other countries adopting the practice later - and carries on to this day. George Brown was a silver retailer located in 3 Fownes Street, Dublin between 1809 and 1856.
