Footnote: The Le Bas family have a long tradition in the gold and silver trade dating back as far as 1574 when they left France for London, and their descendents have remained in the precious metal industry ever since. James Le Bas was apprenticed to his father, William, himself a noted silversmith. He moved in 1786 to work for silversmith Samuel Merton in Foster Lane, London and later with William Pitt, a goldsmith in Westminster. James moved to Dublin around 1800 and set up a manufacturing workshop in Great Strand Street with his two sons, Robert and Benjamin. He died in 1845. Direct descendant, Ronald Le Bas, recently retired as CEO and assay master of the Dublin Assay Office and is currently the CEO of Le Bas precious metals, based in Dublin.
