Provenance: Thomas Damant Eaton (1800-1871) of Eaton Hall, Norwich, and by descent Other Notes: Son of Charles Hodgson, an amateur artist and one of the founding members of the Norwich School of painters, David Hodgson was encouraged from an early age to follow in his father's footsteps. He attended Norwich School, where he was taught by John Crome. He worked in Norwich all his life and exhibited his works at the Norwich Society of Arts. A similar version of the present painting, dated 1825, is at the Yale Center for British Art. Thomas Damant Eaton (1800-1871) became churchwarden of St Peter Mancroft Church in 1832.
Oil on canvas, lined. The paint layer is in a stable condition. There are localised retouchings across the surface which are fairly well matched to the original. The varnish is clear, glossy and even. There is surface dirt and fly spots on the varnish. The frame is missing a section at the right hand side.
