According to an old label to the reverse, the sitter was a granddaughter of Thomas Powle (1513-1601), a Clerk of the Crown and High Steward to Queen Elizabeth of all her manors in Essex.



Condition report:

Framed 96 x 83.5cm

The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The canvas is in plane and the paint layers are stable. Areas of retouching cover wear and abrasion and are generally well matched to the original. The varnish is uneven and matte in areas.
