The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. Recent damage has been caused due to impact from the reverse causing tears to the canvas, flaking and paint loss. These areas are located in the red dress and the head of the gentleman. The painting has suffered from damage in the past which have been repaired, these areas have a smooth texture compared to the original. Areas of overpaint are reasonably well matched to the original. The varnish is even, semi-glossy and slightly yellowed.
