Description

Circle of Giuseppe Maria Crespi (1665-1747)

oil on canvas, in a contemporary Bolognese frame
42.5 x 33.5cm

Provenance:
Thomas Agnew & Sons, London,
Horace Smith-Bosanquet of Broxbournebury,
Thence by descent

The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which appears to have an early lining. The canvas tension is stiff and the picture is in plane. The paint layers have a regular network of age cracks, some of which are slightly raised in the background areas. The painting has a thick varnish layer which is glossy but significantly yellowed. Some overpaint is evident on the sitter’s forehead, the full extent of the overpaint is difficult to determine through the thick varnish layers.
