Description

Moses striking the rock oil on panel 58 x 85cm

Footnote: Provenance: E. N. Onians, Baylham Mill, Baylham, Suffolk, His Sale, London, Sotheby's, 18th October 1995, lot 159, where acquired by the present owner

Condition report: Oil on panel. No obvious panel joins are visible and the support appears to be formed from a single piece of wood, which is unusually wide. The reverse of the panel is very roughly worked although there are bevels present at the sides. There is a split in the panel at the left hand side which appears to be movement within the woodgrain. The paint layer is in a stable condition overall. Many areas are thinly painted and slightly worn. The figure of Moses is painted over the dark brown of the rock and is now slightly lost in the composition due to the aging of the paint layers. There are a few localised loses and small dent and abrasion to the paint layer. The varnish is slightly yellowed and uneven. There are localised areas of retouching present. The frame is in a good condition.
