About this lot

Description

Female figures from classical antiquity: Sappho, Dido, Helena, Ariadne, and Oenone, in faux stone painted roundels one signed lower right below the figure of Oenone 'G. Horner Painter' oil on canvas (5) 70 x 60cm; 82 x 72cm framed

Footnote: These decorative panels from the signature are possibly by George Christopher Horner who might have been an American, mid-19th Century painter, mostly of animals.

Condition report: All five paintings are in a similar condition and will be discussed together. The paintings appear to be in fine weave canvas supports which have been lined. Old holes and damages have been repaired during this process. The paintings all have a network of age cracks, some of which are slightly raised. There are localised losses to the paint layer. The paintings are intentionally matte, probably to mimic a fresco technique. There is very little impasto present apart form in the sitter's robes. These areas of texture have been slightly flattened through the lining process. Retouchings are slightly yellowed compared to the surrounding paint layers but acceptable. The paintings are housed in reverse profile frames with house paint finish.
