Footnote: Robert Edgar Stone, known professionally as R.E. Stone, was an English silversmith. Born in 1903, his work is famous for its handcrafted style. When he was 14, Stone enrolled at the Central School of Arts in London. During his time with the school, he won a scholarship from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. He founded his own workshop in 1929 and some of his most famous work includes the various products that he manufactured to commemorate George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935. These items all featured cast crowns and these designs were subsequently adapted to commemorate the Coronation of Edward VIII in 1937, as in this example. The coronation of Edward VIII was due to take place at Westminster Abbey on 12 May 1937. Preparations had already begun and souvenirs such as this example were already on sale when he abdicated on 11 December 1936 Stone’s work is distinctive for being largely handmade and he was noted for stamping his work with a facsimile signature. He died in 1990 and his items are now in very great demand amongst collectors.
