Description

An Argyle and Southern Highlanders photograph album by Alexander Harvie Maclean, dated 1891,

containing approximately 93 photographs and studio photographs of life in camp, 'Groups of Prisoners', 'Fall in A Company', 'Dreplari Village' etc., the Album includes a "list of photographs of the Toghi expedition from Gillmore Carter Sialkot" leaflet, some being ticked as present in the album. Photographs of the regiment and other views taken in various locations in 1891-1895, 1897, 1906.

Locations include: Hong Kong, Edinburgh, Dagshai, Umballa, Kasanli, Lahore Durbar - 1894, Mian Mir - 1894, Changla Gali - 1895, Srinagar, Kashmere 'Looking towrads Hasi Parbat', Miram Shah, general view, Datta Khel, general view, 'Destruction of Towers' Sheranl, 'Crossing Tochi River' - 1897, and other photographs to include 'Execution of Nanoa', 'Priates at Kowloon', ''Lieutenant Governor and Chiefs of the Punjab', 'Viceroys Camp Lahore', Musketry Class', 'Native Musketry Class', 'Group of Prisoners at Miran Shah'



Footnote:

Alexander Maclean joined the Argyle & Southern Highlanders in 1891 and by 1899 had been promoted to Captain, taking part in the South Africa wars and being mentioned in Dispatches, London Gazette 10th Sept 1901. In 1914 while commanding C company in retreat to Le Cateau, Major Maclean led four Platoons drawn from C & B Companies on an advance through shell fire against the German infantry and was killed in action.



Condition report:

The album covers worn with partially spine missing and corners bumped. Photographs tonally varied, some very faded with spotting and others tonally strong. Photograph laid on card mounts with individual inscriptions and dated titled to mounts. Some discolouration to mounts.
