About this lot

Description

Aimé-Jules Dalou (French, 1838-1902)

A study for Les Moissonneurs (The Reapers) from the artist's sketchbook
stamped with the mark of Auguste Becker 'A.B.' (lower right)
pencil on paper
10.5 x 18cm

Footnote:

This study comes from the collection of Auguste Becker, Jules Dalou’s assistant and friend, who had gathered all the documentation found in the studio (drawings and archive documents) upon the death of the sculptor in 1902. A part of the Becker collection was dispersed during the Galerie Delestre sale in 1978, and the rest is still in private hands.

A patinated plaster relief of this subject, executed between 1895 and 1898, is in the Petit Palais, Paris.

Condition report:

27.5 x 35cm (framed)

Generally, the paper is in a good and stable condition, with no visible signs of major damage or repair. There is a vertical crease down the centre where presumably the paper was once folded in a sketchbook. There is light surface dirt and overall discolouration that is expected with age.
