Description

Adam Barland (British, fl. 1843-1875) Picnickers by a lake with a sheepdog and cattle beyond signed lower right "Adam Barland '81" oil on canvas 74 x 125cm (29 x 49in)
Other Notes: Adam Barland made many paintings and watercolors with views from England, Wales and Scotland. The painting "Storm on the Coast of Scotland" is in possession of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Oil on canvas which has been lined. The painting has a history of flaking with old losses around the edges which have been consolidated and retouched. There are new losses at the lower right corner and localised areas of raised and flaking paint. There is a water stain on the reverse of the canvas which aligns to an area of flaking paint. There are areas of overpaint across the work, mainly in the darker paint passages of the trees. The retouching is reasonably well matched to the original. The varnish is clear and glossy. The frame is missing a section of decorative compo at the upper right corner.
