Description

Democratic Republic of Congo, probably early 20th century, surmounted by the seated figure of a mother breast feeding her child, the sides as masks within radiating reserves 27cm high

Footnote: Called ‘dibu’, and used by Yombe soothsayers and doctors (known as ‘nganga’) to call on spirits and ancestors for help when healing the sick, for oracles or during ceremonies. They were also used during initiation rituals of men’s secret associations to invite ancestors as witnesses.
