Footnote: Provenance: From the collection of Lord Hastings Other notes: In 1675 a law was passed requiring all gold and silversmiths to attend Goldsmiths' Hall in London to record their names and addresses, and have their marks recorded on a metal mark plate. Prior to this date, maker's marks were not so efficiently recorded and indexed, and with many records lost following the great fire of London in 1666 and a further fire in the assay office itself in 1681, tracing early makers from their marks alone is often a challenge. Although this maker's details are now untraceable the mark is still recorded and is listed in 'Jacksons' P118 Literature: The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office. Sir Charles Jackson, Silver & Gold marks of England, Scotland & Ireland, Antiques Collectors Club, 3rd Edition 1994, p118
