Each Bodhisattva wears a crown bejewelled with a small Amitabha icon, also known as Amida or Amitayus - the definition of boundless light. As a bestower of longevity, they are believed to be a celestial buddha who rules over the Pure Land in the West of the universe. Devotion to the Amitabha came to the foreground in China around 650CE and from there spread to Japan.
