Description

A group of three Pechu and one Tsampa bag, Bhutan,

comprising a rare 18th century wool pechu with auspicious geometric symbols in organic pigments, with leather straps, 52 x 53cm, a 19th century striped pechu with auspicious geometric symbols in organic pigments, 31 x 41cm, another, early 20th century with auspicious geometric symbols worked in raw silk on cotton with wool felt corners and leather and silk straps, 50 x 50cm, and a fine and tightly woven 19th century tsampa bag in yak wool with wool strengthened corners, 23 x 37cm

Acquired in the early 1980s



Footnote:

Worked in the same way as other brocaded Bhutanese textiles, the Pechu is a traditional carrying bag usually produced using wool or cotton.



Condition report:

18th century pechu - heavily worn comensurate with age and purpose, holes, loose threads, leather dry

19th century pechu - heavily worn with some parts missing

20th century pechu - some colour running otherwise good

19th century tsampa bag - good
