About this lot

Description

by William Plummer, London 1775, with later French 'Minerva head' stamps, of oval form with scrolled border, the sides lavishly pierced with floral, foliate and scrollwork decoration, the field engraved with an armorial, looped swing handle and raised on a pierced and beaded edged foot, 31 x 26cm 16.7ozt

Footnote: William Plummer was renowned for his exceptional piercing work on silver items, and this basket is a fine example of his skills. The 'Minerva' head stamp was introduced as a guarantee of purity in France in 1838, suggesting that this item was exported some time after its manufacture and was subsequently sold in France.
