probably by John Carter II, London 1775, scallop edged with gadrooned rim, the field with decorative engraving around the crest and motto of 'Purvis of Darsham, Suffolk', raised on four hoof feet, 33cm in diameter, 32.8ozt

Footnote: The Purvis family were long standing, well known and generous benefactors of the parish of Darsham, Suffolk. George Purvis married Margaret Berry, sister-in-law to Admiral Sir John Berry and moved from Edinburgh to Darsham house in 1697. He joined the Royal Navy and was promoted to Captain in 1709. He died in1715. His son, George (1680-1741), also joined the Royal Navy and served under Sir Charles Wager in Gibralter and the West Indies. He was MP for Aldeburgh from 1732 until his death in 1741 His eldest son, Charles Wager Purvis (1715 -1772), also joined the Navy, becoming Rear Admiral and the high Sheriff of Suffolk. He married Amy Godfrey, the niece of the bishop of Ely. They, in turn, had a number of children, one of whom, Charles (1743-1808), had four children. His first born, Elizabeth, arrived in 1775, the same year as this salver was hallmarked and so it is possible that this piece may have been obtained in celebration of this event.
