About this lot

Description

possibly by Cornelius Rietveld of Schoonhaven (1865-1912) with lion passant 2nd standard for 833/1000 standard silver, together with two further untraceable marks, of plain form with exaggerated ears, horns and fringe, hinged saddle decorated with two foliate swags - the centre of one disguising a further vague mark, possibly Minerva - astride a resting fly and with raised tail, 14 x 10cm, 4.6ozt

Footnote: Provenance: The Ruby Red collection of cow creamers. Cornelius Rietveld, a Dutch silversmith and maker of small silverware including cow creamers, had a reputation for having marks hidden or applied in unusual places. He has been known to hide one or more marks in the foliate designs on the saddle, as in this example. Although his marks do not appear to be on the item, the hidden mark may point to his work.
