Description

A Charles II stumpwork casket,

worked in polychrome threads, the top depicting two figures, possibly King Charles II and Queen Henrietta, together with a courtly attendant, the front with a frieze of plants and animals above a scene with a musician and a shepherd in a rural landscape, the hinged lid opening to reveal a lift-out compartment divided into seven niches, raised on ball feet

Acquired from Catherine Christopher in the 1970s.



All areas faded and worn commensurate with age and use, the lower front side with losses exposing linen backing and the sides and backs with similar losses exposing cardboard ground beneath, the top with minimal losses. The ball feet stable and intact but with losses to veneer. The interior with one small glass bottle present, leather tooled interior with some losses, one replacement interior fabric hinge present but detatched and the other missing. No key present, hinges present but with some missing screws.
