Description

Abstract composition signed and dated in pencil 'Hayter / 44' (lower right) pen, ink and watercolour on card 17.5 x 24.5cm

Footnote: Provenance A gift from the artist to Gigi Richter The son of British painter, William Harry Hayter, Stanley William Hayter, ‘Bill’, was born in Hackney, London in 1901. Principally associated with surrealism, op-art and abstract expressionism, Hayter is generally regarded to be one of the most significant and innovative intaglio print makers of the 20 th century. Demonstrating the influence of automatism and the importance of the unconscious in his work, this watercolour is characteristic of Hayter’s energetic and idiosyncratic style. The present work can be seen in the background of a photograph of Gigi Richter at no. 7, Mall Studio, Hampstead, which she rented from Henry Moore during the period, 1946-47 (see page 80).
