18 x 19.5 x 14.5cm

Described by his son, Joseph, as being ‘like a fire, a free electron, he had a lot of energy’, Pierre Culot is widely regarded as one of Belgium’s foremost ceramic artists. Hovering at the intersection between art and utility, Culot’s earthenware forms are prized for their expressive, yet discreet, open glazes and for their bold, simple forms.

Born in 1938, Culot received exceptional training, initially at the School of Arts and Crafts at Maredsous Abbey, under Richard Owczarek, and later with Charles Leplae at the National School for Architecture and Decorative Arts in Brussels. Though he had completed his formal education, Culot continued to hone his craft by visiting the studios of influential potters, including that of Bernard Leach in Cornwall and Shoji Hamada in Japan. In addition to his practice as a ceramic artist, Culot was noted for his work as a sculptor and landscape architect.
