§ Nina Hamnett (Welsh, 1890-1956) Two women with a child inscribed to the reverse "Nina Hamnett" oil on canvas 86 x 81cm (34 x 32in)
Provenance: The collection of the late Eric Stevens, removed from Hampstead, London Other Notes: Nina Hamnett (1890-1956), known as the Queen of Bohemia, led an extraordinary life; her autobiography 'Laughing Torso' is well worth reading. Whilst at art school in London she modelled for Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, many of the works can be seen at the Tate including Torso and the Dancer (a later casting is at Kettle's Yard). She moved to Paris in 1914 and became close friends with Modigliani, Picasso and Cocteau. On her return to London she lived in Fitzrovia working for the Omega workshops, making or decorating fabrics, clothes, murals, furniture, and rugs. Her paintings including portraits, landscapes and figure compositions were influenced in style by her more famous friends and she exhibited in London particularly during the 1920s. She died in London in 1956.
Craquelure around the feet and paint loss along the bottom edge.
