Footnote:

The winner of the 1970 Grand National, featured in the vignettes, was Gay Trip ridden by Pat Taafe. Out of 28 runners, only seven finished the race. Gay Trip started at odds of 15/1, carrying top weight of 11st 5lbs despite previously never having won a race longer than 2 ½ miles. He took the lead at the second last fence and won by twenty lengths. Since 1970, only Red Rum has won the Grand National carrying top weight.

Known as the jockey of Arkle, Taaffe only rode Gay Trip in the race because the assigned jockey, Terry Biddlecombe, stood down due to injury.
