§ John Stanton Ward, CBE, RA (British, 1917-2007) View across the Grand Canal, Evening signed and dated "John Ward '75" in pencil lower right, inscribed by the artist to the reverse "Just down from the Accademia on the way to Peggy Guggenheim gallery" watercolour 23 x 31cm (9 x 12in); together with the 1976 exhibition catalogue signed by John Ward (2) Provenance: J S Maas & Co Ltd, 15a Clifford Street, New Bond Street, London, W1Exhibited: London, J S Maas, October - November 1976, no. 2John Stanton Ward (1917-2007) was a portrait painter and book illustrator. His illustrations for books included Joyce Grenfell's George, Don't Do That and H.E. Bates The Darling Buds of May. He worked as an illustrator for Vogue magazine before deciding to concentrate on portrait painting. His obituary described him as an "establishment painter par excellence". He was best known for his portraits of the Royal Family and commissioned portraits of cabinet ministers and other celebrities, including Sir Roger Bannister. The National Portrait Gallery holds fifteen works by Ward, including several pen and ink wash drawings.
