§ John Stanton Ward, CBE, RA (British, 1917-2007) Model at ease signed "John Ward 1984" lower right pencil and ink heightened in white, 31 x 46 cm (12 x 18in); together with a signed copy of 'The Paintings of John Ward', inscribed 'for dear Peggy' dated 1991, published by David & Charles. The model in the present sketch was a sculpture student who posed for the painting "The Doll Girl", which John Ward painted in 1983. John Stanton Ward (1917-2007) was a portrait painter and book illustrator. His illustrations for books included Joyce Grenfell's George, Don't Do That and H.E. Bates The Darling Buds of May. He worked as an illustrator for Vogue magazine before deciding to concentrate on portrait painting. His obituary described him as an "establishment painter par excellence". He was best known for his portraits of the Royal Family and commissioned portraits of cabinet ministers and other celebrities, including Sir Roger Bannister. The National Portrait Gallery holds fifteen works by Ward, including several pen and ink wash drawings.
