Description

§ John Spencer-Churchill (British, 1909-1992) St Paul's from the South Bank signed 'J Spencer-Churchill' (lower right); titled and dated 1946 oil on canvas 79 x 125cm (31 x 49in)
Other Notes: Spencer-Churchill was the great-grandson of the 7th Duke of Marlborough and nephew of Sir Winston Churchill - his brother-in-law was Anthony Eden. Whilst travelling in Italy at the age of twenty-three, he formed a strong friendship with the artist, Sir William Nicholson, and met Bernard Meninsky whilst travelling from Munich to Madrid. He was still there in Malaga during the Spanish Civil War, sketching for the Illustrated London News. He painted for Lady Churchill at Chartwell, creating murals and friezes.
Oil on canvas. The canvas tension is slightly slack with minor undulation around the edges. The paint layer and frame are in a good condition overall.
