Provenance: Collection of the late Samuel Alper, OBE (1924-2002) Other Notes: Sam Alper was a great patron of the arts and was responsible for bringing the Curwen Press to his home at Chilford Hall, Cambridgeshire in 1989. Alper formed close friendships with many contemporary artists and he met John Bratby in 1985. Bratby expressed a wish to paint Alper and invited him to his studio in Hastings. Although Alper chose not to purchase the portrait, he bought numerous other works from the artist.
Oil on canvas, the paint layers have been thickly worked up and are in a good condition overall. There are minor undulations to the canvas caused by the thickness of the paint layers and a build up of dust on the reverse. There is a build up of dust on the surface of the paint layer. The painting has a simple wooden frame with battens attached to the side of the stretcher, the upper batten has warped.
