Description

§ Joan Oxland (Welsh, 1921-2009) Boats moored by village jetty signed lower left "Joan Oxland 1950" oil on canvas, in a grey painted frame 51 x 40cm (20 x 16in)
Joan Oxland studied art at Cardiff School of Art and Wimbledon School of Art, and trained as a teacher at the Institute of Education at London University. She later spent a formative and fascinating sabbatical year as a mature student at the Alliance Française in Paris. Her first teaching post was as art teacher at Queen Anne Grammar School in York, but she returned to Cardiff in 1950 to take up a post at her old school. The move back to Wales coincided with her first critical success when an excellent representation of "The Village of Zennor" was accepted by the Royal Academy for its 1950 Summer Exhibition. This success was followed by appearances at the Royal Academy in 1952, 1955 and 1957. She taught at Cardiff High School for Girls from 1950 to 1965 and from 1968 to 1973 at Llandaff College of Education, where she became Head of the Design Department.
Old exhibition with artist's address of Trencroft, Hill Road, Llanishen - and No. 1
