Description

§ Gladys Maccabe, HRUA, ROI, FRSA (Irish, 1918-2018) Galway Market signed 'Gladys Maccabe ROI' (lower left) oil on board 33 x 45cm (13 x 18in)
Provenance: Leigh Underhill Gallery, Islington, London, 1985 Other Notes: Born in Randalstown, Co. Antrim, Gladys Maccabe established herself as an artist at the age of sixteen when one of her pieces was featured in the Royal Drawing Society's magazine. She went on to study at the Belfast College of Art as well as working as a fashion and arts correspondent for newspapers and television. In 1941, she married fellow artist and musician, Max Maccabe, and the pair exhibited together on numerous occasions - first at Robinson & Cleaver in Belfast, 1942 and then at the Kensington Art Gallery in England in 1949. They were both members of the Contemporary Ulster Group. Maccabe believed that there was an under appreciated group of female artists and consequently, she set up the Ulster Society of Women Artists in 1957. Her subject matter consists predominantly of everyday scenes that she witnessed around her, especially depicting the gathering of people in busy environments which is evident in 'Galway Market'.
The painting is executed on a hard board support. The support and paint layers are in an excellent condition overall. The frame has a canvas slip and gilded outer section, both in a good condition.
