§ George Hammond Steel (British 1900-1960)

St Ives with Church
signed 'Hammond Steel' (lower right)
mixed media on board
34 x 29cm

The son of gifted artist G.T. Steel, George Hammond Steel is acclaimed both as a Painter and stained-glass designer. Born in 1900, Hammond Steel received his training at Sheffield School of Art, though it was along the working harbours and dramatic coastlines of Cornwall that he truly discovered his artistic voice.

Rendered in a cool, tempered palette of slate and sage, and with a meticulously worked surface, the present lot, a depiction of St Ives Parish church, is reflective of both the Cornish landscape and of Hammond Steel’s broader body of work.
