'The Blue Dress and White Door' signed lower right 'Ernst Liebermann / MCHN' oil on canvas 74 x 64 cm

Footnote: Provenance: Galerie Commeter, Hamburg Born in Germany in 1869, Liebermann received his early training under the tutelage of Josef Scheurenberg, at the Berlin Academy of Arts between 1890 and 1893, before working professionally as an illustrator in Munich from 1897. Liebermann’s most significant and enchanting illustrative works included The Frog Prince (1904), a 1904 iteration of Grimm’s Fairy Tales , and the 1907 children’s anthology series Kindersang-Heimatklang . After abandoning his illustrative efforts, Liebermann produced a number of lithographic topographical works, only later becoming known for his paintings in oil.

Condition report: In its original frame. Both stretcher and frame inscribed in pencil with the artist's name and the title 'Blue dress and white door' in German. Oil on canvas which is unlined. The canvas has good tension and is in plane. There is a loss to an area of impasto at the lower right corner, otherwise the paint layer is in a very good condition. The varnish has yellowed and has a slightly grubby appearance. There is one section of frame missing top left corner.
