§ David Jones, CH, CBE (British, 1895-1974) Gulliver's Travels, 1925, a series of 33 (of 42) illustrations published by the Golden Cockerel Press all numbered "424/480" to the reverse wood engravings, some hand-coloured, various sizes (33), framed measuring 24 x 19 cm Provenance: C S Barlow Esq.; Donald and Nora Van Den Bergh Other Notes: Born in Kent, the son of a Welsh printer, David Jones drew upon his Welsh heritage in his work. He was educated at Camberwell School of Art and Westminster School of Art. In 1915, Jones enlisted in the Royal Welch Fusiliers as an infantryman and he served on the Western front until March 1918. After the war, he embraced Roman Catholicism and joined Eric Gill’s small community of artists at Ditchling in 1921. It was here that he was taught wood engraving by Desmond Chute, later leaving with Gill for Wales to develop and refine his techniques. Much of Jones’ work was for the Golden Cockerel Press, with woodcuts for Gulliver’s Travels (1925) designed to illustrate Jonathan Swift's original text.
