A founder member of the Society of Wood Engravers, London born author and artist, Clifford Webb, is remembered as one of the most prominent figures amongst a group of artists who sought to revive the practice of wood engraving during the 1920s.

After training under Walter Bayes and Bernard Meninsky at Westminster School of Art between 1919 and 1922, Webb was appointed as a part-time lecturer at Birmingham School of Art and St Martin’s School of Art, London. Particularly renowned for his heavily stylised images of the natural world and for his bold disregard for traditional wood engraving techniques, Webb notably illustrated eight books for the Golden Cockerel Press between 1937 and 1954. In recognition of his invaluable contribution to printmaking, Webb was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1936 and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1948.

Adhered to mount with two lengths of tape along top and bottom edges. Surface with very minor toning and one small area of deeper discolouration along the lower edge, just between the title and numbering. Lower margin with a small crease. Image with some negligent fading, overall a good, strong impression.
