Description

§ Charles Robinson Sykes (British, 1875-1950) Nude studies red chalk on buff paper (a pair) 40 x 30cm (16 x 12in)
Other Notes: Charles Sykes is best known for designing the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot for Rolls-Royce cars. He was commissioned to produce the mascot by Lord Montagu in 1909 and the iconic statue was modelled as a beautiful young woman in flowing robes. The model for the mascot was probably Eleanor Thornton, secretary to Claude Johnson of the Automobile Club. Thornton became Sykes' favourite model, posing for many of his sketches and paintings.
