Renting in Cambridge

Most people who rent in Cambridge have come for work, drawn by Addenbrooke's and AstraZeneca, with the Science Park and the wider biomedical campus adding to the pull, and often on fixed-term or rotating contracts where renting beats buying. Families make up the next big group, usually renting to get within reach of the city's state and private schools.

Where to rent in Cambridge

Cambridge is compact, so where you rent comes down to what you need nearby rather than how far out you go. Anyone working at Addenbrooke's or the science campus tends to look south, to Trumpington for the new Cambridge South station on its doorstep or to Cherry Hinton for more space and a high street of its own.

Families cluster in the streets around the best schools, Hartington Grove and Blinco Grove among them, to sit within catchment. The terraced roads off Mill Road, such as Perowne Street and Catherine Street, suit anyone who wants shops and cafes on the doorstep and the centre a short walk away. Chesterton on the north side is the value option, with gentler rents but the busway and Cambridge North still close.

Renting with Cheffins

A decent EPC rating and off-street parking are the two things to filter for early, since both go quickly. The Cheffins lettings team can point you towards the roads that suit how you live, so register what you're after and hear about the right home early. Our guide to renting in Cambridge goes through each area in more detail.

Renters who are also weighing up buying can see property for sale in Cambridge. Ely, Newmarket, Saffron Walden and Haverhill are worth a look too, all of which put you within an easy commute of the city for less rent and more space for your money.
