Clare is Suffolk's smallest town, and people searching for property here are almost always drawn by its character rather than its size. Set in the Upper Stour Valley between Haverhill and Sudbury, it packs more than 100 listed buildings, a ruined Norman castle in its own country park, a medieval priory and a monthly market into a community of around 2,000. Homes here are mostly period, from timber-framed and Georgian houses in the centre, to cottages along the river, with a smaller number of modern properties on the edges. It is a town to settle into rather than commute from, with Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge both an easy drive when you need them.
Because Clare is small and period-heavy, buyers often widen the search along the valley and towards the nearest towns. Kedington lies a few miles west towards Haverhill and offers village life at lower prices, while Haverhill itself, the closest town, sees many more homes come up and an easier commute towards Cambridge.
