Big Motoring World, one of the UK’s largest car supermarket businesses, has expanded its operations with the purchase of a substantial warehouse unit in Peterborough in a deal brokered by Cheffins.

The car supermarket, who currently operate across four sites in Kent and Stratford, purchased the 170,000 sq ft building on a ten-acre site for in excess of the guide price of £5.5 million through Cheffins’ commercial department, which were acting as agent for the vendor, The Heys Group.

The purchase of the freehold property is an important part of Big Motoring World’s ambitious growth plans and it will be used for car preparation before the vehicles are dispatched to the company’s other sales sites or to customers direct.

Based on an established industrial and warehousing location on Morley Way, the property, Celta House – until recently occupied by furniture manufacturer Willis & Gambier – has excellent transport links with rapid access to the A1 (M) and A47.

Peterborough has become an increasingly popular regional distribution location, as evidenced by the presence of Amazon, IKEA, DPD and LIDL.

Philip Woolner, joint managing partner at Cheffins who brokered the deal, said: “This is a significant transaction – it was one of very few freehold buildings of this size available in the region and its rarity was reflected in the high level of demand we received from both occupiers and developers.

“We were delighted to have worked with Peter Waddell and the team at Big Motoring World on the deal.”

Peter Waddell, CEO of Big Motoring World, said: “I’m very happy with the purchase of this site which is going to help us expand our business and would like to thank Cheffins for the professional way they completed the deal.

“We have already recruited over 200 people to work at the building and we are currently looking to employ another hundred.”

George Heys, director of The Heys Group, said: “This was a most satisfactory and speedy transaction, performed with a straightforward and genuine guy, Peter Waddell, and professionally conducted by Philip Woolner.”
