On Saturday 7th September, a team of eight Cheffins employees completed an 90-mile charity cycle ride in support of Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust.
The event formed part of Cheffins’ pledge to raise £200,000 for charity during the firm’s 200th anniversary year. The cycle challenge raised £5,831, which will be match-funded by Cheffins, bringing the total to an impressive £11,662.
Taking in each of the Cheffins offices on route, the team of cyclists started at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, before heading past the Cheffins HQ in Cambridge, then the team travelled through the flatlands to Sutton Sale Ground and Ely. Then, against a strong headwind the team battled to the office at Newmarket and through a tough hilly section to Haverhill, before taking on more rolling hills towards Saffron Walden culminating in a brisk bike back to Cambridge through Elmdon, thanks to the, now beneficial, tailwind!

David Bushell, Head of IT at Cheffins, who was part of the team said: “While the weather was better than it had been earlier in the week, riders were faced with a tough 16 mph headwind all the way from Ely to Newmarket and onwards through the hills to Haverhill. It was a fantastic team effort, not just from the participants who had, in many cases, dedicated months to getting fit and ready for this ride, but also from the support staff and office staff, everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. The new build of a children’s hospital is a powerful motivator when fatigue kicks in at 70 miles.”
Team members included Claire Powell, Edward Tabner, Richard Freshwater, David Bushell, Ryan Bourgaise, Andy Nicholas, Adam Twiddy and Clair Eskandary.
The monies raised will go towards the brand new Cambridge Children’s Hospital, which is currently under construction. Cheffins’ fundraising as part of this important project will provide a dedicated playroom for children in treatment, as the firm focusses its aim on providing mental health support and services for the next generation across the region. When complete, the hospital will serve 1.5 million young people living across the East of England.
