October Fine Art Auction Highlights

Art & Design from 1860 - 6th October 2016

The October Art & Design from 1860 sale saw good prices throughout the sale with interesting highlights  from glass & ceramics through to furniture and paintings. A collection of Rene Lalique pieces attracted attention and lot 17, an impressive Lalique opalescent glass vase, designed in 1927, decorated with large dahlias made £5,500 from £1,000-2,000 estimate.  Salerooms, phones and online bidding were busy and keen bidding continued throughout the sale into the Furniture & Picture section.

The furniture section saw a Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) oak dining chair from the Argyle Street Tea Rooms, Glasgow, come under the hammer. This chair, with its curved top rail was used for the tables at the end of the Luncheon Room and commissioned by Miss Catherine Cranston for her ‘art tearooms’, they have now become Mackintosh’s trademark tearoom chairs.  The bold sturdy functionality of these chairs date them to c.1897-1899 and the chair made £2,400.

The Picture section saw solid results throughout. Up and coming artists commanding good prices in the sale included Fabian Perez, (Argentinian, b.1967).  Perez romantic scenes are attracting many buyers and good prices, lot 422 ‘The Train Station’, (illustrated)  made £6,500.  Algernon Newton, RA (British 1880-1968) is another artist fetching excellent prices in auction. Newton was one of the most interesting and compellingly original English artists of the neo-Romantic 20th century British painters and lot 426, ‘Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland’, made £11,000 and lot 361 William Scott (British 1913-1989) ‘Table top still life’ finally sold for £13,000.
