About this lot

Description

Two decade or rosary rings,

each with a circular head, approximate diameter 8.4mm, carved with an 'X', the shank with ten projections, sizes Q and K½, unmarked white metal, gross weight 3.3g (2)

The rings have been to the Museum of London and as per the report, they can date from the 16th Century onwards, and were produced well into the 18th century. Each ring has ten projections and the cross is in the form of an 'X', this is because these were easily hidden compared to rosary beads, and were worn on the index finger of the dominant hand, just below the knuckle, so that it can be turned easily for prayer.
