J.W. Benson, London - A Victorian Sterling silver 'Ludgate' half hunter pocket watch,

circa 1891, spring-loaded outer cover hinged at 9 o'clock with blue enamel Arabic numerals and inner chemin de fer chapter ring around the circular glazed aperture, signed white dial, 42mm diameter, with black Roman numerals, gold coloured double spade and whip hands, subsidiary seconds register at 6 o'clock and chemin de fer chapter ring, gilt three quarter plate key wind movement signed THE LUDGATE WATCH J.W. BENSON PATENT NO 4658 BEST LONDON MAKE BY WARRANTY TO H.M. THE QUEEN LUDGATE HILL LONDON, number 91694, case, 51mm diameter, cover with engine turned engraving, verso hinged at 9 o'clock, with engine turned engraving around a vacant belted escutcheon shaped cartouche, inner with casemaker's mark of J.W. Benson Ltd. and London hallmarks for Sterling silver, numbered 18, the cuvette similarly marked, 132.8g gross, presented with the winding key and in the original signed gilt tooled burgundy case lined in cream satin and burgundy velvet



Crystal - Complete and secure. Some light surface scratches as to be expected.

Dial - Overall in good condition. One or two very, very minor grizzles to the very edge, together with a very minor mark to the 'V' of VII

Movement - In working order, though not tested for timekeeping or endurance. Hands move freely in both directions, and the movement winds well with the key.

Case - Some very minor surface scratches, dents and dings to the case as to be expected and commensurate with use. Some light wear to the engine turned engraving. Enamelling to the numerals in good condition.
