Description

Irish School, late 18th Century Portrait of Maria Murray Hume (1771-1848), in blue silk dress, white lace sleeves, lace fichu and a lace mob cap, resting her arm on a book oil on canvas 71 x 60cm (28 x 23in)
Provenance: By descent within the family of the sitter at Glenalla House, County Donegal, Ireland Other Notes: Maria Murray Hume was the daughter of John Hume, Dean of Derry, and the wife of George Vaughan Ledwich Hart.
Over-cleaned at some stage. Old stretcher bar marks can be seen from the front. Oil on canvas which appears to be lined. The canvas tension is slightly slack with minor undulations due to lack of tension. There are localised losses to the paint layer caused by impacts to the surface. There is an area of flaking paint across the sitter's neck. There is a layer of discoloured varnish which has ingrained dirt emphasising the canvas texture. The frame has chips and losses to the decorative surface.
