Description

Flemish School, early 16th century

Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane
oil on panel
42 x 29.5cm

Provenance:
Collection of the late Sir Georg and Lady Solti

An attribution to the workshop, or to a follower of Colyn de Coter (c. 1450-1455 - c.1539-1540) or The Master of Sainte Gudule (fl. 1480–1499) might be considered.

The painting is executed in oil on a wooden panel formed from a single board with vertical woodgrain. The panel has suffered from woodworm damage at the right hand side which has led to a spilt forming the entire length of the panel. This has been repaired from the reverse with small wooden buttons. There is a also a split at the left hand side of the panel which does not extend the full length of the picture. There are raised areas of paint following the vertical woodgrain of the panel. Blisters and small losses have formed in localised areas. The varnish layer is yellowed and degraded, no longer adequately saturating the paint layers below.

Framed 53 x 43cm
