About this lot

Description

Circle of Pieter Borsseler (Dutch, c. 1632-1692) Portrait of a lady, probably a widow, half length, in a grey dress oil on canvas laid down to board, in a 19th Century frame 69 x 52cm (27 x 20in)
Provenance: Exning House, Newmarket, Suffolk
Oil on canvas which has been attached to a piece of hardboard. The canvas has not been evenly adhered to the board and there are undulations and bulges, notably around the edges. There are a few old damages to the canvas, notably the hole with paint loss to the right of the sitter's nose and an old tear in the upper right quadrant. The paint layers show signs of age and have developed a network of age cracks. The paint layers are obscured by a very degraded varnish layer which has crizzled and is flaking off in large areas. Where is remains intact the varnish is very glossy. The frame is in a good, stable condition.
