Geoffrey Richard Clegg Hill (1837-1891) with his Hawkstone pack of otterhounds on the banks of the River Wye, Shropshireoil over photographic base laid down to board35 x 50cmLiterature:The Field, 13th March 1880, p. 309The Honourable Geoffrey Hill was the second son of Rowland Hill, 2nd Viscount Hill of Hawkstone and of Hardwicke and a great nephew of General Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill. He and his famous Hawkstone pack of otterhounds eliminated 700 otters in Shropshire in a period of 20 years. The present portrait can be identified from its description with that which was reported in the local newspapers to have been presented to the Hon. Geoffrey Hill in March 1880 and to have come out of the studio of 'Mr Laing of Shrewsbury', who is recorded as a photographer active in Shrewsbury in the 1880s.An oil portrait of a similar subject by this artist was sold in these rooms on 29th July 2020, lot 338 for £2,000.Oil applied to a photograph which has been laid down to board. Scuff above one of the figures near the left edge. Some wear and abrasions to the edges. Scattered paint losses, especially in the hounds in the centre. Chips and scuffs to both the gilt slip/mount and the frame itself. Please see further images. Framed 51 x 65cm.
