During his youth, Hope spent several years travelling the Mediterranean collecting artefacts that he would later display at his famous house built by Robert Adam in the 1770s on Duchess Street in London and later in his country home in Deepdene, Surrey.Hope insisted that furniture designs should be based on archaeologically and historically correct foundations and that examples from the classical and ancient worlds of Greece and Egypt should act as their template. Many of Hope’s designs were published in his book Household Furniture and Interior Decoration of 1807. This book, along with Hopes's fame as a collector was highly influential in promoting Greek and Egyptian styles as high fashion in interior decoration.General wear to the legs, some fading to the back, opening of central join to back, back leg joins a little loose
