A Chinese large Dehua figure of the Indian Monk Damo, early 20th century,

modelled standing barefoot on waves in robes, with bushy eyebrows and intense gaze
71.5cm high



Damo was a monk of Indian origin who travelled to China in the sixth century and whose teachings became the foundation of Chan Buddhism. He is said to have crossed the Yangtze River barefoot on a reed leaf to escape his pursuers.
