A facsimile letter from the artist dated 1984, attached to the reverse of the painting, specifies that this scene was painted in 'Brogden' marsh on the north side of the estuary of the Rivers Kent and Bela, opposite Arnside and above the Sandside Viaduct, which was demolished in 1942. The north side of the marsh used to be the winter feeding ground for up to a thousand Greylags and has since been converted into arable land.

Framed 66.5 x 91.5cm

The painting is executed in oil on a linen canvas support which is unlined. The canvas tension is slightly slack but the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good condition overall. The varnish is clear, even and glossy with a light layer of surface dirt including some fly spots.
